Washington, D.C. – The FBI announced today the appointment of Timothy A. Ferguson as Assistant Director of the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division, effective March 5, 2023.

As Assistant Director, Mr. Ferguson will oversee CJIS’s mission to collect, analyze, and disseminate criminal justice information to law enforcement and other authorized agencies. He will lead a division of approximately 800 employees responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating the FBI’s core information systems, including the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), as well as providing training and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies nationwide.

“Tim Ferguson brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the CJIS Division,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “His leadership and innovative thinking will be instrumental in ensuring that our law enforcement partners have access to the information they need to keep our communities safe.”

Mr. Ferguson has served in various leadership roles within the FBI since joining the Bureau in 1996. He most recently served as the Section Chief of the CJIS Division’s Systems Development and Integration Section, where he oversaw the development, implementation, and maintenance of the FBI’s core information systems.

Prior to that, Mr. Ferguson served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cincinnati Field Office, where he was responsible for all criminal, counterterrorism, and counterintelligence investigations conducted within the Southern District of Ohio. He also served as the FBI’s Deputy Chief Information Officer for Infrastructure and Operations, where he oversaw the Bureau’s information technology infrastructure and operations.

Mr. Ferguson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University and a Master of Science degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland, University College. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the FBI Executive Leadership Institute.

The FBI’s CJIS Division is the largest criminal justice information network in the world, serving more than 23,000 law enforcement agencies and organizations nationwide. CJIS provides law enforcement with access to a wide range of information, including criminal history records, wanted person information, and stolen property databases.
