MP Lapointe Announces Government of Canada Support for Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses Across Northern Ontario

Timmins, ON – February 18, 2025 – Today, Charlie Angus, Member of Parliament for Timmins—James Bay, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, announced over $3 million in funding for projects that will support Black entrepreneurs and businesses across Northern Ontario.

“Black entrepreneurs and businesses are a vital part of our economy and community,” said Angus. “This funding will help them to grow and succeed, creating jobs and opportunities for all Canadians.”

The funding will be provided through the Black Entrepreneurship Program, which is part of the Government of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan. The program provides funding and support to Black entrepreneurs and businesses across Canada to help them start, grow, and succeed.

One of the projects that will receive funding is the Northern Ontario Black Entrepreneur Network (NOBEN). NOBEN is a non-profit organization that provides support and resources to Black entrepreneurs in Northern Ontario.

“This funding will allow us to expand our reach and provide more support to Black entrepreneurs in the North,” said NOBEN Executive Director, Akwasi Owusu-Bempah. “We are grateful to the Government of Canada for their commitment to supporting Black entrepreneurship.”

The other project that will receive funding is the Black Business Initiative (BBI). BBI is a non-profit organization that provides loans and grants to Black entrepreneurs in Ontario.

“This funding will allow us to provide more financial support to Black entrepreneurs in Northern Ontario, and across the province,” said BBI Executive Director, Valerie Callum. “We are excited to partner with the Government of Canada to help Black entrepreneurs succeed.”

The Black Entrepreneurship Program is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse economy. The program is expected to create jobs, boost economic growth, and help to close the gap between Black entrepreneurs and businesses and other Canadians.
