Government of Canada and Yukon Sign Agreement to Tackle Unsheltered Homelessness
Whitehorse, Yukon – February 18, 2025 – The governments of Canada and Yukon today announced a significant milestone in their shared commitment to addressing unsheltered homelessness in the territory.
The two levels of government have signed a bilateral agreement that will provide $50 million in federal funding over five years to support the Yukon government’s Homelessness Prevention and Reduction Plan.
“Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. “This agreement is a major step forward in our efforts to end unsheltered homelessness in Yukon and ensure that everyone in the territory has access to the support they need.”
“We are grateful for the federal government’s partnership in addressing this critical issue,” said the Honourable Jeanie Dendys, Yukon’s Minister of Health and Social Services. “This funding will enable us to build more affordable housing, provide essential services, and implement innovative solutions to prevent and reduce homelessness in our communities.”
The Homelessness Prevention and Reduction Plan outlines a comprehensive approach to addressing unsheltered homelessness in Yukon, including:
- Increasing the supply of affordable housing, including transitional and supportive housing options
- Providing outreach services and support to people experiencing homelessness
- Investing in prevention and early intervention programs
- Developing a data-driven and evidence-based approach to homelessness reduction
“This agreement is a testament to the importance of collaboration between all levels of government,” said Lara Tessaro, Executive Director of the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition. “By working together, we can create a more just and equitable society where everyone has a place to call home.”
The agreement builds on the existing efforts of the Yukon government, including the Housing First Yukon program, which has successfully housed over 100 individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
The federal government has committed to investing $2 billion over 10 years in the Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy. The strategy focuses on four key pillars: prevention, intervention, housing, and assistance.
“This agreement is another example of our government’s commitment to ending homelessness in Canada,” said Hussen. “We will continue to work with our partners in Yukon and across the country to ensure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”
