Federal government invests in new building for Biathlon Yukon
Canada NewsWire OTTAWA, ON, Feb. 18, 2025 /CNW/ – The Government of Canada is investing in a new multi-purpose building for Biathlon Yukon, to provide a central hub for biathlon activities and training.
The new building will be located at the Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club and will include a biathlon range, ski waxing and storage areas, a fitness centre, and a multi-purpose room. The project will also include upgrades to the existing clubhouse and a new access road.
The Government of Canada is providing $2.4 million for the project through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Government of Yukon is providing $1.5 million, and Biathlon Yukon is contributing the remaining $600,000.
“Our government is committed to investing in infrastructure that supports the health and well-being of Canadians,” said the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health. “This new building will provide a much-needed space for biathlon athletes to train and compete, and will also be a great place for the community to gather and enjoy the outdoors.”
“This investment will help Biathlon Yukon reach its full potential,” said Erik Dickson, President of Biathlon Yukon. “The new building will provide a world-class facility for our athletes to train and compete, and it will also be a great place for the community to come together and enjoy the sport of biathlon.”
Construction on the new building is expected to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed by the fall of 2026.
Biathlon Yukon is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of biathlon in the Yukon. Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Yukon athletes have had success at the national and international levels, including competing at the Olympic Winter Games.
