New York – The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected, members of the Security Council stressed during a meeting on Thursday to discuss the ongoing conflict in the country.
The meeting was convened at the request of Ukraine, which has been embroiled in a conflict with Russia-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country since 2014.
In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the conflict has had a “devastating impact” on Ukraine, both in terms of human suffering and economic damage. He called for a “renewed commitment” to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The members of the Security Council expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also called for the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements, which were signed in 2015 to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy all expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also called for the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
Russia, however, said that the Minsk Agreements were not being implemented by Ukraine. Russia also accused the United States and its allies of interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs.
China called for a “balanced” approach to the conflict in Ukraine. China said that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected, but it also said that Russia’s security concerns should be taken into account.
The meeting ended with the members of the Security Council expressing their hope that a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine can be found. They also called for all parties to implement the Minsk Agreements fully.
