RKI Minutes Served for Internal Communication
Berlin: The minutes of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from the early phase of the corona pandemic did not serve as a basis for political decisions, but mainly for internal communication. This is the result of an evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board of the RKI. The evaluation was carried out by a committee of independent experts at the request of the Federal Ministry of Health. The committee examined 123 minutes from the period March 2020 to May 2021. The evaluation is intended to contribute to clarifying the role of the RKI in the early phase of the corona pandemic.
The evaluation also states that the RKI’s risk assessments were generally in line with the state of knowledge at the time. However, there were some inaccuracies and contradictions in the minutes. These were due, among other things, to the rapid development of the pandemic and the lack of reliable data.
The evaluation makes several recommendations for improving the quality of the RKI’s risk assessments. These recommendations include, among other things, that the RKI should establish a central unit for risk assessment and that it should develop clearer guidelines for the preparation of minutes.
