February 17, 2025
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, met today with the Honourable Don Farrell, Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism, to discuss the strong trade and investment relationship between Canada and Australia.
The two ministers welcomed the recent entry into force of the Canada-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment by up to $4.2 billion annually. They also discussed opportunities for further collaboration in areas such as clean technology, critical minerals, and Indigenous economic development.
Minister Ng and Minister Farrell reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advance shared priorities, such as supporting small businesses, promoting women’s economic empowerment, and addressing climate change. They also discussed the importance of maintaining open and rules-based trade in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Canada and Australia are close partners with shared values and a strong commitment to trade and investment,” said Minister Ng. “The Canada-Australia FTA will create new opportunities for businesses and workers in both countries, and I look forward to working with Minister Farrell to deepen our economic relationship in the years to come.”
“Australia and Canada are both committed to free trade and open markets,” said Minister Farrell. “The Canada-Australia FTA will provide a significant boost to our already strong economic relationship, and I am confident that it will lead to increased trade and investment between our two countries.”
Canada and Australia have a long history of economic cooperation. In 2022, bilateral trade in goods and services totaled $42.3 billion. Australia is Canada’s eighth-largest trading partner, while Canada is Australia’s sixth-largest trading partner.
The Canada-Australia FTA is a comprehensive trade agreement that will eliminate tariffs on 99% of goods traded between the two countries. It will also reduce barriers to trade in services, investment, and government procurement. The FTA is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and workers in both countries, and to boost bilateral trade and investment by up to $4.2 billion annually.
