Madagascar’s WTO Trade Policy Review: UK Statement
17 February 2025
The UK welcomes the opportunity to provide its statement on Madagascar’s Trade Policy Review. We commend Madagascar’s efforts to implement a number of reforms aimed at improving its trade environment, including the adoption of a new trade policy and the establishment of a national trade facilitation committee.
We are pleased to note that Madagascar has made progress in reducing tariffs and simplifying its customs procedures. However, we encourage Madagascar to continue its efforts to reduce trade barriers, particularly in sectors where high tariffs and non-tariff barriers remain.
We recognize the importance of Madagascar’s agricultural sector, and we welcome the government’s efforts to support smallholder farmers and improve agricultural productivity. We encourage Madagascar to continue to invest in agricultural research and extension services, and to promote access to finance for farmers.
We also recognize the importance of the services sector for Madagascar’s economic development. We encourage Madagascar to continue to liberalize its services sector, particularly in areas such as telecommunications, financial services, and tourism.
We are concerned about the high levels of corruption in Madagascar. Corruption can act as a significant barrier to trade and investment, and it can also undermine the rule of law. We encourage Madagascar to continue its efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency.
We are encouraged by Madagascar’s commitment to regional integration. We believe that regional integration can help to boost trade, attract investment, and reduce poverty. We encourage Madagascar to continue to play an active role in regional organizations such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
We are confident that Madagascar has the potential to become a major trading nation. With continued reforms and a commitment to open and fair trade, Madagascar can create a more prosperous future for its people.
We stand ready to work with Madagascar to support its trade development efforts. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with Madagascar on trade policy and other issues of mutual interest.
Thank you.
