Government of Canada Invests More Than $1.4 Billion to Strengthen Official Languages Education Across Canada
February 17, 2025
The Government of Canada announced today an investment of more than $1.4 billion over the next five years to strengthen official languages education across the country. This investment is part of the government’s commitment to promoting linguistic duality and ensuring that all Canadians have access to high-quality education in both English and French.
“Our government recognizes the importance of official languages education for all Canadians,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “This investment will help us ensure that students have the opportunity to learn and excel in both English and French, regardless of where they live in Canada.”
The investment will support a range of initiatives, including:
- Early childhood education: $500 million to provide early learning and child care programs in both official languages.
- K-12 education: $600 million to enhance French-language instruction in minority communities and improve the quality of English-language instruction in French-speaking communities.
- Post-secondary education: $300 million to support post-secondary institutions in developing and delivering innovative official languages programs.
The investment will also support the development of new educational resources and tools, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers.
“This investment is a significant step forward in our efforts to strengthen official languages education in Canada,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Official Languages. “It will help us ensure that all Canadians have the opportunity to learn and use both official languages, and that our linguistic duality continues to be a source of pride and unity for our country.”
The investment is part of the government’s larger commitment to promoting linguistic duality. In 2018, the government launched the Action Plan for Official Languages, which includes a number of measures to strengthen the use of both official languages in Canadian society.
The investment in official languages education is welcomed by stakeholders across the country.
“This investment is a game-changer for official languages education in Canada,” said Alex Atamanenko, President of the Canadian Parents for French. “It will help us ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and succeed in both English and French, and that our country remains a truly bilingual nation.”
“This investment is a testament to the government’s commitment to linguistic duality,” said Jean-Robert Gauthier, President of the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada. “It will help us ensure that French-speaking Canadians have access to high-quality education in their own language, and that English-speaking Canadians have the opportunity to learn French.”
The Government of Canada is committed to promoting linguistic duality and ensuring that all Canadians have access to high-quality education in both English and French. This investment will help us achieve these goals and ensure that our country remains a vibrant and bilingual nation for generations to come.
