German Contributions to International Organizations

Berlin: The German government has increased its contributions to international organizations in the 2023 federal budget. The total budget for these contributions amounts to 4.2 billion euros, an increase of 100 million euros compared to the previous year.

“The federal government is thus underscoring the importance of international cooperation and multilateralism,” said Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. “In times of global crises, it is more important than ever to work together to find solutions. International organizations play a key role in this.”

The largest share of the contributions will go to the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, with around 1.7 billion euros. This is followed by the European Union (EU) and its affiliated institutions, with around 1.2 billion euros. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will each receive around 200 million euros.

The federal government’s contributions are used to finance the work of these organizations in areas such as development cooperation, humanitarian aid, peacebuilding, and environmental protection. Germany is one of the largest contributors to the budgets of many international organizations.

In addition to the contributions from the federal budget, Germany also provides voluntary contributions to international organizations. In 2022, these amounted to around 1.4 billion euros.
