A Legacy of Grit: Toyota Research and Development EVP Mike Sweers, Land Cruiser Return to Their Roots
Ann Arbor, Mich., February 14, 2025 – Mike Sweers, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor North America Research and Development (TMNA R&D), recently returned to his roots in off-road adventure by taking the all-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser on an epic journey through the unforgiving terrain of Moab, Utah.
Sweers, who grew up exploring the backcountry of his native Colorado, has always been passionate about off-roading. He joined Toyota in 1991 and has since held various leadership roles within the company, including Chief Engineer of the Tacoma and Tundra pickups.
In 2022, Sweers was appointed EVP of TMNA R&D, responsible for overseeing the development of Toyota’s future vehicles and technologies. Despite his demanding job, Sweers still makes time to pursue his passion for off-roading.
“There’s nothing quite like getting behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser and hitting the trails,” said Sweers. “It’s a true test of both the vehicle and the driver.”
The 2025 Land Cruiser is the latest in a long line of legendary off-road vehicles from Toyota. The new model features a rugged body-on-frame construction, a powerful V6 engine, and Toyota’s advanced off-road technology.
Sweers and his team put the Land Cruiser through its paces on some of Moab’s most challenging trails, including Hell’s Revenge and Poison Spider. The Land Cruiser performed flawlessly, conquering every obstacle with ease.
“The new Land Cruiser is an incredible vehicle,” said Sweers. “It’s the most capable and technologically advanced Land Cruiser ever built.”
Sweers’ journey through Moab was not only a chance to reconnect with his passion for off-roading but also an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the Land Cruiser.
“The Land Cruiser has been a part of Toyota’s DNA for over 70 years,” said Sweers. “It’s a symbol of grit, durability, and adventure. I’m proud to be a part of its history.”
After completing his journey, Sweers returned to Ann Arbor with a renewed appreciation for the Land Cruiser and the spirit of exploration that it represents.
“The Land Cruiser is more than just a vehicle,” said Sweers. “It’s a way of life. It’s about pushing your limits and embracing the unknown.”
