Government seeks industry experts to join key packaging advisory groups

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is today seeking industry experts to join one of three key advisory groups – the UK Food and Drink Packaging Group (UKFDPG), the Flexible Plastic Packaging Group (FPPWG) and the Paper, Metal and Glass Packaging Group (PMGPWG) – to help shape the government’s plastic reform programme.

These industry-led groups consist of experts of varying seniority and experience representing a range of industry and stakeholder organisations throughout the food and drink supply chain, packaging manufacturers, waste management and recycling and environmental groups.

Experts joining the groups will work with Government to:

  • review and advise on the progress of the UK Plastic Pact
  • advise on the development and implementation of the UK Plastics Tax
  • provide expertise on the consistency of reuse and refill systems
  • review the implementation of consistent collections for recycling
  • consider the technical feasibility of recycling different types of packaging.

There will be opportunities to engage in all three groups, or focus on a single area of interest. This provides a chance for those involved to tailor their involvement with the work of the groups, ensuring their individual expertise is best utilised.

Successful applicants will join these industry-led advisory groups to help provide robust evidence and insight into the issues and opportunities relating to each material stream and the effectiveness of different government interventions.

The department expects a high level of commitment from those selected from up to 4 meetings per year, attendance at other workshops and review of consultation documents.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2023.

Notes for editors:

  • The Terms of Reference for each of the advisory groups can be found on GOV.UK.
  • The final membership of the groups will be decided taking into account the need to ensure a balance of expertise and interest across group members.
  • The work of each of the advisory groups will be closely aligned with the activity of the Resources and Waste Strategy Board’s (RWSB) plastics priority group.
  • The RWSB also has four aligned Working Groups which report into the Plastics Priority Group. More information on the RWSB and its Working Groups can be found on their webpage.
