The Government of Canada Strengthens Freshwater Protection Through 65 Community Projects
February 14, 2025
OTTAWA, ON—The Government of Canada has announced a significant investment in freshwater protection, with 65 new projects funded through the Freshwater Action Plan. This investment will support local communities across Canada in protecting and restoring their water resources.
“Our government is committed to protecting Canada’s freshwater resources for generations to come,” said the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault. “These projects will make a real difference in communities across the country, ensuring that we have clean, safe water for drinking, recreation, and the environment.”
The Freshwater Action Plan is a $1 billion investment that was launched in 2022. It provides funding for projects that protect and restore freshwater ecosystems, improve water quality, and enhance flood resilience.
The 65 new projects announced today will support a wide range of activities, including:
- Restoring wetlands and riparian areas
- Improving stormwater management
- Reducing agricultural runoff
- Monitoring water quality
- Engaging Indigenous communities in water stewardship
These projects will benefit communities of all sizes across Canada, from rural municipalities to large urban centers. For example, one project in the Township of Langley, British Columbia, will restore a 20-hectare wetland that will help filter stormwater and reduce flooding. Another project in the City of Kingston, Ontario, will create a green infrastructure network that will capture and treat rainwater, reducing pollution in Lake Ontario.
“These projects will have a tangible impact on the health of our waterways and the communities that depend on them,” said the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Terry Duguid. “We are proud to support these local initiatives that are making a real difference in protecting Canada’s freshwater resources.”
The Freshwater Action Plan is part of the Government of Canada’s broader commitment to protecting the environment and addressing climate change. The government has also invested in other programs to support freshwater protection, such as the Canada Water Agency and the Low Carbon Economy Fund.
“We all have a role to play in protecting our freshwater resources,” said Guilbeault. “By investing in these community projects, we are empowering Canadians to take action and make a difference in their communities.”
