Statement of Support from Ministers Anandasangaree, Hajdu, and Ien on the 34th Annual Women’s Memorial March

February 14, 2025 – Ottawa, ON – Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defense; the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services; and the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, issued the following statement:

“This year, we mark the 34th anniversary of the Women’s Memorial March, which honors all women and girls who have experienced violence.

“The annual march is a solemn reminder of the tragic killings that took place at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989, as well as the countless other women and girls who have lost their lives to violence.

“The march is also a call to action to end violence against women. We know that violence against women is a persistent and devastating problem in our society, and we must all work together to create a future where women and girls are safe from harm.

“This year’s march is particularly poignant as we continue to grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated gender-based violence. The pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for safe and accessible supports for women and girls who experience violence.

“We are committed to taking action to end violence against women and girls. We are working to increase funding for shelters and other services that support survivors of gender-based violence. We are also working to address the underlying causes of violence, such as poverty, inequality, and discrimination.

“We encourage all Canadians to join us in the fight against violence against women and girls. Let us all work together to create a more just and equitable society where all women and girls are safe and free from fear.”

The Women’s Memorial March will take place in Montreal on February 14, 2025. For more information, please visit www.womensmemorialmarch.ca.
