Federal Government Invests in Rural Transit Solutions across Alberta
Ottawa, ON – February 14, 2025 – The Government of Canada announced today a significant investment to improve transit services in rural communities across Alberta. The $20 million investment will fund projects that enhance transportation options and make it easier for residents to access essential services.
“Access to reliable and affordable transportation is crucial for the well-being of rural communities,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “Our government is committed to supporting projects that improve transit services and make it easier for Albertans to get where they need to go.”
The investment will be used to support a range of projects, including:
- Expanding existing bus routes to serve more communities
- Introducing new on-demand transit services
- Enhancing accessibility features on buses and at transit stops
- Developing innovative transportation solutions tailored to the needs of rural areas
“This investment is a game-changer for rural communities in Alberta,” said the Honourable Ric McIver, Minister of Transportation for Alberta. “It will allow us to improve transit services and make it easier for people to get around.”
The projects will be selected through a competitive application process. Applications are now open and will close on March 15, 2025.
“We are excited to see the innovative solutions that communities come up with to improve transit services,” said Megan Leslie, Member of Parliament for Halifax. “This investment will make a real difference in the lives of people in rural Alberta.”
The Rural Transit Solutions Fund is part of the Government of Canada’s $1.9 billion Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The program provides funding for a wide range of infrastructure projects, including public transit, broadband, and green infrastructure.
