Ottawa, ON – The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing over $10 million in research and innovation to support the health of crops and improve the sustainability of agriculture in Canada.
The funding will support 10 projects through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s AgriScience Program. The projects will focus on developing new technologies and practices to prevent and manage pests, diseases, and weeds in crops.
“Our government is committed to supporting our farmers and agri-food businesses as they work to produce safe, high-quality food for Canadians and the world,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “These research projects will help our farmers stay ahead of emerging threats to crop health and adopt innovative practices that will make their operations more sustainable.”
The projects will be led by researchers at universities, colleges, and research institutions across Canada. They will focus on a wide range of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, and potatoes.
“Ontario’s farmers are facing increasing challenges from pests, diseases, and weeds,” said the Honourable Lisa Thompson, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “This funding will help our researchers develop new and innovative solutions to these challenges, ensuring that Ontario farmers can continue to produce the high-quality food that our province is known for.”
The AgriScience Program is a five-year, $320 million investment in research and innovation in the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector. The program is designed to help farmers adopt new technologies and practices that will improve their productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
