A new program from the Government of Canada will help skilled trades apprentices in Atlantic Canada develop the self-reliance and entrepreneurial skills they need to succeed in their careers.

The Self-Reliance for Skilled Trades Apprentices in Atlantic Canada program will provide $3 million over three years to support projects that develop and deliver self-reliance and entrepreneurial training to apprentices in the region.

The program will be delivered by the Atlantic Apprenticeship Harmonization Project Inc. (AAHPI), a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality and efficiency of apprenticeship training in Atlantic Canada.

“Skilled trades are essential to the economy of Atlantic Canada, and we need to ensure that our apprentices have the skills they need to succeed,” said the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “This program will help apprentices develop the self-reliance and entrepreneurial skills they need to start their own businesses or work independently.”

The program will offer a variety of training and support services to apprentices, including:

  • Self-reliance training: This training will help apprentices develop the skills they need to be self-sufficient, such as problem-solving, decision-making, and financial management.
  • Entrepreneurial training: This training will help apprentices develop the skills they need to start and operate their own businesses.
  • Mentorship: Apprentices will be matched with mentors who can provide them with guidance and support.
  • Networking opportunities: Apprentices will have the opportunity to network with other apprentices, employers, and industry stakeholders.

“AAHPI is pleased to be partnering with the Government of Canada to deliver this important program,” said Gordon MacInnis, Executive Director of AAHPI. “We believe that this program will make a real difference in the lives of skilled trades apprentices in Atlantic Canada.”

The Self-Reliance for Skilled Trades Apprentices in Atlantic Canada program is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to investing in the skills and training of Canadians. The government has invested more than $1 billion in apprenticeship training since 2015, and has set a target of creating 50,000 new apprenticeship positions by 2024.
