Aiken, S.C. – United States Attorney Corey F. Ellis announced today that Richard Williams, 34, of Aiken, South Carolina, pled guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.

Evidence presented in court established that from 2017 to 2021, Williams and others conspired to submit fraudulent loan applications to various banks and lending institutions. The fraudulent loan applications contained false information about the borrowers’ income, employment, and assets. Williams and his co-conspirators used the proceeds of the fraudulent loans for their own personal gain.

The total loss to the banks and lending institutions as a result of the fraudulent loan scheme is approximately $1,434,025.

Senior United States District Judge J. Michelle Childs accepted the guilty plea and scheduled Williams’ sentencing for May 16, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. Williams faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison.

The charges resulted from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant United States Attorneys Elliott B. Daniels and Andy Moorman are prosecuting the case.
