Government of Canada Funds 14 Projects in the Yukon Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program
February 12, 2025 – Ottawa, ON – Government of Canada
The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for 14 community-based projects in the Yukon through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). The NHSP aims to support the well-being and social participation of seniors by providing funding for projects that promote healthy living, lifelong learning, intergenerational connections, and social inclusion.
The funded projects will address a range of local needs and priorities, including:
- Active Living: Funding for a community garden and outdoor recreation programs to promote physical activity and healthy eating.
- Lifelong Learning: Workshops and courses on topics such as digital literacy, financial management, and Indigenous culture to enhance seniors’ knowledge and skills.
- Intergenerational Connections: Programs that connect seniors with youth through mentoring, storytelling, and shared activities to foster mutual understanding and respect.
- Social Inclusion: Support for seniors who experience isolation or social barriers, including transportation services, social events, and peer support groups.
“Our government is committed to supporting seniors and ensuring they have the opportunities to live healthy, active, and fulfilling lives,” said Yukon MP Larry Bagnell. “These NHSP projects will make a real difference in the lives of seniors in our communities.”
The successful projects were selected through a competitive application process based on their alignment with the program’s objectives, community impact, and sustainability. The total funding for the 14 projects is approximately $236,000.
“We are grateful for the support of the NHSP in enabling us to offer these valuable programs and services to seniors in the Yukon,” said Lisa O’Connor, Executive Director of the Yukon Council on Aging. “These projects will contribute to the well-being and social integration of seniors in our communities.”
The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal government program that supports projects that improve the well-being of seniors and foster their full participation in society. Since 2004, the NHSP has funded over 30,000 projects across Canada, benefiting millions of seniors.
