Canada Invests in Cutting-Edge Carbon Capture and Storage to Drive Clean Energy Innovation
Ottawa, ON (February 12, 2025) – The Government of Canada today announced a significant investment of $250 million in cutting-edge carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to drive clean energy innovation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The investment, made through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), will support the research, development, and deployment of innovative CCS solutions across key industrial sectors in Canada. CCS technologies allow for the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial processes and power plants, preventing its release into the atmosphere.
“Our government is committed to investing in clean energy solutions that will create jobs, reduce emissions, and build a more sustainable future for all Canadians,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources. “This investment in carbon capture and storage will help us unlock the potential of this critical technology and accelerate our progress towards net-zero emissions.”
The funding will be allocated through a competitive process to projects that demonstrate the following criteria:
- Collaboration between industry, research institutions, and government organizations
- Technological advancements and innovation in CCS processes
- Scalability and cost-effectiveness of the solutions
- Potential for significant greenhouse gas emission reductions
“We are thrilled to see this strong investment in CCS technology from the Government of Canada,” said Jessica St. Amand, President and CEO of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association of Canada. “CCS is an essential part of the clean energy mix and will play a vital role in achieving our climate goals.”
The investment is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and position Canada as a leader in the development and deployment of CCS technologies. NRCan estimates that the investment could lead to the creation of up to 5,000 new jobs in the CCS sector.
The Government of Canada has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40-45% below 2005 levels by 2030. CCS is recognized as a key technology that can help Canada achieve these targets and contribute to its long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
