Government of Canada Invests Over $2.5 Million in Indigenous-Led Economic Development Projects Across Northwestern Ontario
February 11, 2025
Thunder Bay, ON – The Government of Canada today announced an investment of over $2.5 million in four Indigenous-led economic development projects in Northwestern Ontario. This investment is part of the government’s commitment to supporting Indigenous communities and businesses in creating jobs and economic growth.
The funding will be provided through the Aboriginal Business Development Program (ABDP), which is delivered by Indigenous Services Canada. The ABDP provides funding and support to Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses to start, grow, and succeed.
The following projects are receiving funding:
- $1 million to the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Development Corporation for the development of a new business park in Kenora. The business park will provide space for Indigenous businesses to operate and grow, and will create new jobs in the community.
- $600,000 to the Red Rock Indian Band for the construction of a new community centre. The centre will provide space for community events and activities, and will also house a business incubator to support Indigenous entrepreneurs.
- $500,000 to the Fort William First Nation for the development of a new tourism enterprise. The enterprise will offer guided tours of the Fort William Historical Park and provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the Fort William First Nation.
- $400,000 to the Rainy River First Nations for the development of a new commercial fishery. The fishery will provide jobs for community members and generate revenue for the Rainy River First Nations.
“These projects will create jobs, boost the economy, and improve the quality of life in Indigenous communities across Northwestern Ontario,” said Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services. “Our government is committed to supporting Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs, and we will continue to work with Indigenous communities to create a more prosperous future for all.”
The Government of Canada is committed to working in partnership with Indigenous peoples to create a more inclusive and prosperous economy. This investment in Indigenous-led economic development projects is a key part of that commitment.
