UK remains committed to achieving justice for survivors of Daesh crimes: UK statement at the UN Security Council
10th February 2025
The UK remains committed to achieving justice for the survivors of Daesh crimes, the UK’s Special Envoy for Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, has said.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the issue, Lord Ahmad said that the UK would continue to support efforts to ensure that survivors of Daesh’s crimes have access to justice and redress.
He said: “The UK remains committed to achieving justice for the survivors of Daesh crimes and to supporting efforts to ensure that they have access to justice and redress.”
“We welcome the progress that has been made in recent years, but there is still much more to be done.”
“The UK will continue to work with our partners to ensure that survivors of Daesh’s crimes have access to justice and that those responsible for these heinous acts are held to account.”
The UK has been a leading voice in the international community calling for justice for the survivors of Daesh crimes. In 2019, the UK co-hosted the first-ever international conference on the issue, which brought together survivors, governments, and civil society organisations to discuss ways to improve access to justice for survivors.
The UK has also provided funding to support a number of initiatives to help survivors of Daesh crimes, including a programme to provide legal aid to survivors and a fund to support the rehabilitation of survivors.
The UN Security Council meeting on the issue of justice for survivors of Daesh crimes was held on 10th February 2025. The meeting was attended by representatives from all 15 members of the Security Council, as well as by representatives from a number of other countries and organisations.
The meeting was chaired by the UK’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward. Ms Woodward said that the meeting was an important opportunity to take stock of the progress that has been made in recent years and to identify the challenges that remain.
She said: “The UK remains committed to working with our partners to ensure that survivors of Daesh’s crimes have access to justice and that those responsible for these heinous acts are held to account.”
“We will continue to support efforts to provide survivors with the support they need to rebuild their lives and to ensure that the international community does not forget the suffering that they have endured.”
