[Ottawa, ON] – February 10, 2025 – The Government of Canada is announcing new investments to support and strengthen Indigenous communities’ capacity to respond to marine incidents. This announcement builds on the Government’s commitment to a clean, healthy and sustainable marine environment for all Canadians, as part of the Oceans Protection Plan.
The Government of Canada will invest $30 million over five years to support Indigenous coastal communities in building their capacity to prevent, prepare for and respond to marine incidents. This funding will support initiatives such as:
- Training and education: Providing training and education to Indigenous community members in marine safety, incident management and environmental response.
- Equipment and infrastructure: Purchasing and maintaining equipment and infrastructure to support marine incident response, such as boats, containment booms and personal protective gear.
