Government of Canada supports four Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean organizations to grow and diversify regional economy
Saguenay, Quebec, February 10, 2025 – The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and the Honourable Dominique Anglade, Quebec Minister of Economy and Innovation, today announced a total of $8 million in repayable contributions to four organizations in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. This funding will help these organizations implement projects that will grow and diversify the regional economy, create jobs, and support innovation.
The four organizations receiving funding are:
- Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean will receive $3 million to establish a new research and innovation centre in artificial intelligence and health. The centre will bring together researchers, clinicians, and industry partners to develop new AI-powered tools and technologies to improve patient care and outcomes.
- Collège d’Alma will receive $2 million to create a new training program in advanced manufacturing. The program will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to work in the region’s growing manufacturing sector.
- Université du Québec à Chicoutimi will receive $1.5 million to establish a new chair in sustainable development. The chair will conduct research on sustainable development issues facing the region and develop solutions to address these challenges.
- Centre de développement économique de la Haute-Côte-Nord will receive $1.5 million to support the development of a new tourism industry in the Haute-Côte-Nord region. The project will include the creation of new tourism products and attractions, as well as marketing and promotion initiatives.

The repayable contributions are being provided through the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program, which is designed to support projects that will help to grow and diversify the regional economy. The program is delivered by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.
