Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Ministers of Agriculture Discuss Canada-United States Trading Relationship
February 8, 2025 | 13:43pm
Ottawa, Ontario – Federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) Ministers of Agriculture met today to discuss the Canada-United States trading relationship. The meeting was chaired by the Honorable Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
The Ministers discussed a range of issues, including:
- The importance of the Canada-US trading relationship. The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner, and agriculture is a key component of that relationship. In 2022, Canada exported $26.5 billion worth of agricultural products to the United States, and imported $22.2 billion worth of agricultural products from the United States.
- The need to address trade barriers. The Ministers discussed the need to address trade barriers that impede the flow of agricultural goods between Canada and the United States. These barriers include tariffs, non-tariff trade measures, and regulatory differences.
- The importance of promoting innovation. The Ministers agreed that innovation is essential to the continued growth of the Canada-US trading relationship. They discussed ways to promote innovation in the agricultural sector, such as investing in research and development, and supporting start-ups.
- The need to collaborate on climate change. The Ministers recognized the importance of collaborating on climate change, which is a major threat to the agricultural sector. They discussed ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The Ministers agreed that the Canada-US trading relationship is vital to the prosperity of both countries. They committed to working together to address the challenges facing the relationship, and to promote growth and innovation in the agricultural sector.
In addition to the Ministers, the meeting was attended by representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago.
