Mayor Bowser Encourages DC Residents to Take Advantage of Tax Season Resources, Celebrates 50 Years of the Earned Income Tax Credit
Washington, DC (February 7, 2025) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged District residents to take advantage of free tax preparation services and resources available during the 2025 tax season. The Mayor also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal tax credit that helps low- and moderate-income working individuals and families save money on their taxes.
“Filing your taxes can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be,” said Mayor Bowser. “We have free, safe, and confidential tax preparation services available at multiple locations across the District. I urge all eligible residents to take advantage of these resources to ensure they receive the maximum refund they deserve.”
The District’s Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) is partnering with community organizations to offer free tax preparation services at 10 locations across the city. These services are available to individuals and families who meet certain income requirements and are unable to prepare their own tax returns.
In addition to free tax preparation services, DCRA is also providing free tax information and assistance through its Taxpayer Service Center and online resources. Residents can call the Taxpayer Service Center at (202) 442-4444 or visit the DCRA website at dcra.dc.gov/taxpayer for more information.
The EITC, which was created in 1975, is a refundable tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed by eligible taxpayers. The EITC is especially beneficial for working families with children, as it can provide a significant boost to their income.
“The EITC is a valuable resource for low- and moderate-income families,” said Mayor Bowser. “It can help them save money on their taxes, reduce poverty, and improve their financial well-being. I encourage all eligible residents to claim the EITC when they file their taxes.”
To qualify for the EITC, taxpayers must meet certain income and filing status requirements. For more information on the EITC, visit the IRS website at irs.gov/eitc.
