Millions to see faster journeys as government green lights £90 million for 4 essential road schemes across England

The government has today (7 February 2025) announced a £90 million investment to upgrade 4 major roads across England, which will cut journey times and improve safety for millions of drivers. The schemes will:

  • Widen the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon
  • Upgrade the A47 between Peterborough and Norwich
  • Improve the M54 between Junctions 1 and 4
  • Create a new bypass on the A585 in Lancashire

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said:

This £90 million investment will make a real difference to people’s everyday lives, cutting journey times and improving safety for millions of drivers.

We are committed to leveling up transport across the country and these upgrades will improve connectivity between our towns and cities, helping to boost economic growth and create jobs.

The A14 upgrade will see the road widened to 3 lanes in each direction between Cambridge and Huntingdon, creating a continuous dual carriageway. This will reduce congestion and improve journey times for the 85,000 drivers who use this road every day.

The A47 upgrade will see the road duelled between Peterborough and Norwich, creating a continuous dual carriageway. This will cut journey times by up to 20 minutes for the 50,000 drivers who use this road every day.

The M54 upgrade will see the road widened to 4 lanes in each direction between Junctions 1 and 4. This will reduce congestion and improve journey times for the 70,000 drivers who use this road every day.

The A585 bypass will create a new 3-mile bypass to the south of Preston. This will reduce congestion and improve journey times for the 40,000 drivers who use this road every day.

The government is also investing in a number of other road schemes across the country, including upgrades to the A1, A12, A19 and M6. These schemes will help to improve connectivity and reduce journey times for millions of drivers.
