£15 million food surplus fund now open for applications
- 7 February 2025
Organisations across England can now bid for a share of a £15 million fund to help them tackle food waste and support people in need.
The Food Surplus Fund, launched today (7 February 2025), will provide grants of between £100,000 and £5 million to charities, community groups and businesses to help them collect, store and distribute surplus food to those who need it most.
It is estimated that around 10 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK each year, with much of it ending up in landfill. This waste not only has a significant environmental impact, but it also means that many people are going hungry.
The Food Surplus Fund aims to help reduce food waste and ensure that more surplus food is reaching those who need it. The fund will support projects that:
- Collect surplus food from businesses and organisations
- Store and distribute surplus food to charities and community groups
- Develop new ways to use surplus food
- Raise awareness of food waste and promote sustainable food practices
Environment Minister Rebecca Pow said:
“Food waste is a huge problem in the UK, and it is something that we are determined to tackle. The Food Surplus Fund will help us to reduce food waste and ensure that more surplus food is reaching those who need it most.
“This fund will support a range of projects, from food banks and community kitchens to innovative new ways of using surplus food. We are committed to working with organisations across the country to make sure that everyone has access to good, affordable food.”
The Food Surplus Fund is part of the government’s £150 million Tackling Food Waste and Surplus Fund. This fund was announced in the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, which sets out the government’s ambition to become a world leader in resource efficiency.
Applications for the Food Surplus Fund are now open and will close on 28 March 2025.
