Minister Anandasangaree Announces Pilot Projects Supporting Yukon First Nations Studies Towards a Greener Economy
February 7, 2025
Ottawa, ON – Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, announced $1.5 million in funding for two pilot projects that will support Yukon First Nations in developing their own green economy strategies.
The projects are part of the Government of Canada’s $2 billion Indigenous Economic Development Fund, which is designed to support Indigenous communities in developing their economies and creating jobs.
The first project, led by the Yukon First Nations Education Council (YFNEC), will develop a curriculum and training program for First Nations students on clean energy, sustainable forestry, and other green economy sectors. The program will be delivered at Yukon College and will provide students with the skills they need to start their own businesses or work in green economy jobs.
The second project, led by the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN), will develop a green economy strategy for Yukon First Nations. The strategy will identify opportunities for First Nations to participate in the green economy and will develop recommendations for how to remove barriers to their participation.
“These projects will help Yukon First Nations develop the skills and knowledge they need to participate in the green economy,” said Minister Bains. “They will also help to create jobs and economic opportunities for First Nations communities.”
“The green economy is a growing sector that offers significant opportunities for Indigenous communities,” said Chief Mike Smith, Grand Chief of the CYFN. “These projects will help Yukon First Nations to develop the skills and knowledge they need to take advantage of these opportunities.”
“YFNEC is committed to providing First Nations students with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy,” said Dr. Rod Simeon, President of YFNEC. “This project will help us to develop a curriculum and training program that will prepare our students for careers in the green economy.”
The Government of Canada is committed to working with Indigenous communities to support their economic development and create jobs. The Indigenous Economic Development Fund is a key part of this commitment and will help to ensure that First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities have the resources they need to thrive in the 21st century economy.
