The Government of Canada announced today an investment of $24.2 million over five years to support Indigenous sport programs and initiatives. “This investment is a significant step towards reconciliation and the recognition of the unique challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous communities in sport,” said Dr. Tobias Woyke, Chair of the Aboriginal Sport Circle. “It will allow us to continue to support the development of Indigenous sport programs and initiatives, and to create a more inclusive and equitable sport system for all Canadians.”
The funding will be used to support a range of programs and initiatives, including:
- Coaching and mentorship programs for Indigenous athletes and coaches
- Sport camps and clinics for Indigenous youth
- Capacity-building initiatives for Indigenous sport organizations
- Research and evaluation to support the development of effective Indigenous sport programs
“This investment will make a real difference in the lives of Indigenous athletes and communities,” said Mandy Greyeyes, a former Olympian and current member of the Aboriginal Sport Circle Board of Directors. “It will help to remove barriers to participation, create opportunities for success, and inspire the next generation of Indigenous athletes.”
