Ottawa, Ontario (February 7, 2025) – The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Indigenous communities in their efforts to use sport as a tool for social development. Through Sport Canada, the department responsible for federal sport policy, the Government of Canada is providing funding to Indigenous organizations across the country to deliver sport-based programs and initiatives that address the unique needs of their communities.

The Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities (SSDIC) program is a three-stream funding program that supports Indigenous organizations in their efforts to use sport to improve the health, well-being, and social development of Indigenous peoples. Stream Three of the SSDIC program provides funding to Indigenous organizations for projects that focus on the development and implementation of sport-based programs and initiatives that address the unique needs of Indigenous communities.

The following is a list of the funded applicants for Stream Three of the SSDIC program for the 2024–2026 funding cycle:

  • Assembly of First Nations (AFN): $2.5 million to develop and implement a national Indigenous sport strategy.
  • Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK): $2.0 million to develop and implement a national Inuit sport strategy.
  • Métis National Council (MNC): $1.5 million to develop and implement a national Métis sport strategy.
  • First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv): $1.0 million to develop and implement a bachelor’s degree program in Indigenous sport management.
  • National Aboriginal Sport Circle (NASC): $0.5 million to develop and implement a national Indigenous sport research program.

These projects will have a significant impact on the lives of Indigenous peoples across Canada. The projects will help to increase participation in sport and physical activity, improve health and well-being, and promote social development.
