Sudan: Top aid official warns against escalating violence in two states

February 6, 2025

KHARTOUM, Sudan – The top United Nations humanitarian official in Sudan has warned of escalating violence in two states, urging all parties to immediately cease hostilities and protect civilians.

In a statement released on Monday, Adam Abdelmoula, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in West Darfur and South Kordofan states.

“Reports indicate that clashes between armed groups in West Darfur have resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians, with many seeking refuge in neighboring Chad,” Abdelmoula said. “In South Kordofan, renewed fighting has hindered the delivery of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities.”

Abdelmoula called on all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians. “Indiscriminate attacks on civilians, looting, and burning of homes must stop immediately,” he said. “All parties must respect international humanitarian law and ensure that civilians are protected.”

The UN official also urged the Sudanese government to take immediate steps to address the root causes of violence and promote peace and reconciliation. “The government has a responsibility to protect its citizens and create conditions conducive to sustainable peace,” Abdelmoula said.

The escalation of violence in West Darfur and South Kordofan comes at a time when Sudan faces multiple humanitarian crises. Ongoing armed conflict, food insecurity, and displacement have left millions of people in need of assistance.

The UN and its partners are providing life-saving aid to affected populations, including food, water, shelter, and health care. However, escalating violence is hampering the delivery of humanitarian assistance and putting the lives of aid workers at risk.

Abdelmoula called for increased international support to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. “The international community must continue to support the Sudanese people and provide the resources needed to meet their urgent humanitarian needs,” he said. “We must also work together to find a lasting solution to the conflict and promote peace and stability in Sudan.”
