Ottawa, ON – February 6, 2025 – Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge today announced $10 million in funding for Indigenous-led sport initiatives across Canada. This funding will support projects that promote physical activity, healthy living, and sport participation among Indigenous peoples.
“Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence, and empower youth,” said Minister St-Onge. “This funding will help Indigenous communities across Canada access the resources they need to participate in sport and reap its many benefits.”
The funding will be distributed through Sport Canada’s Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (ISPAR) Program. ISPAR supports Indigenous-led sport initiatives that promote participation, leadership, and excellence in sport.
“This funding will make a significant difference in the lives of Indigenous peoples across Canada,” said Rick Brant, Chief Executive Officer of the Assembly of First Nations. “It will help us to create opportunities for our youth to participate in sport, develop their leadership skills, and live healthy, active lives.”
The funding announcement was made at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s (CSTA) Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreation Symposium. The symposium brings together Indigenous leaders, sport organizations, and government officials to discuss the importance of sport in Indigenous communities.
“The CSTA is proud to partner with Sport Canada on this important initiative,” said Rick Traer, President and CEO of the CSTA. “This funding will help to create more opportunities for Indigenous peoples to participate in sport and develop their leadership skills.”
