FREDERICTON, NB – Today, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Dominic LeBlanc, Member of Parliament for Beauséjour, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced an investment of over $1.3 million to provide more healthy meals and snacks to children in New Brunswick. This investment is part of the Government of Canada’s Food Security Innovation Network (FSIN), a $100 million initiative to help address food insecurity in Canada.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that all Canadians have access to safe, nutritious food,” said Minister Bibeau. “This investment will help provide more healthy meals and snacks to children in New Brunswick, and will make a real difference in their lives.”

“The Food Security Innovation Network is a key part of our government’s plan to help address food insecurity in Canada,” said Minister Duclos. “This investment will help us to learn more about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to addressing food insecurity, and will help us to develop more effective programs and policies in the future.”

The investment will be used to support a number of projects in New Brunswick, including:

  • A program to provide healthy meals and snacks to children in after-school programs
  • A program to provide healthy lunches to children in low-income families
  • A program to provide cooking classes and nutrition education to children and their families

“This investment is a welcome addition to our efforts to address food insecurity in New Brunswick,” said Andrea Sorhaug, Executive Director of the New Brunswick Food Security Network. “We know that children who have access to healthy food are more likely to be healthy and successful in school. This investment will help us to ensure that more children in New Brunswick have access to the food they need to thrive.”

The FSIN is a five-year initiative that will fund projects across Canada that are working to address food insecurity. The FSIN is part of the Government of Canada’s $1.9 billion Food Policy for Canada, which is a comprehensive plan to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating in Canada.
