Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Details:
A Morgantown man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after traveling to Mexico with the intent to purchase a child for sexual purposes.
According to court documents, 38-year-old Jeremy Hunter was arrested in June 2022 at the Hidalgo-Texas International Bridge, while returning from Mexico. FBI agents searched Hunter’s vehicle and found a backpack containing a laptop, camera, condoms, and other items consistent with child sexual exploitation.
Further investigation revealed that Hunter had been communicating with an individual in Mexico about purchasing a child for $10,000. He had traveled to Mexico to meet with the individual and take possession of the child.
“This case is a disturbing example of the lengths some individuals will go to in order to exploit children,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Nordwall. “The FBI is committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society and will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice.”
Hunter pleaded guilty to one count of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and one count of attempted transportation of a minor with intent to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Thomas Kleeh.
“This case highlights the importance of being vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney William Powell. “The FBI and our law enforcement partners are working around the clock to combat child exploitation and ensure that those who seek to harm children are held accountable.”
The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, with assistance from the Morgantown Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations.
