Minister Anandasangaree announces support for Indigenous and community-based food solutions in the North and Inuit Nunangat
February 5, 2025 – The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, today announced $30 million in funding over three years to support Indigenous and community-based food solutions in the North and Inuit Nunangat. This funding will help to address food insecurity and improve the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples in these regions.
“Food insecurity is a serious issue in many Indigenous communities in the North and Inuit Nunangat,” said Minister Hajdu. “This funding will help to address this issue by supporting Indigenous and community-based food solutions that are culturally appropriate and sustainable.”
The funding will be used to support a variety of initiatives, including:
- Developing and implementing community-based food security plans
- Establishing community gardens and greenhouses
- Training community members in food production and preservation
- Supporting traditional food harvesting and processing activities
- Developing new and innovative food distribution systems
“This funding is a significant step forward in addressing food insecurity in the North and Inuit Nunangat,” said Natan Obed, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. “It will help to ensure that Inuit have access to healthy, affordable food, and it will support the development of sustainable food systems in our communities.”
The funding is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. It is also part of the government’s broader efforts to address food insecurity in Canada.
“Food insecurity is a complex issue with no easy solutions,” said Minister Hajdu. “But by working together with Indigenous communities, we can make a real difference in the lives of people in the North and Inuit Nunangat.”
