Man prosecuted for running illegal waste site near Milton Keynes

A man has been prosecuted for running an illegal waste site near Milton Keynes.

Christopher Blain, of Buckingham Road, Buckingham, pleaded guilty to two offences under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016.

The offences relate to the operation of an illegal waste storage and treatment site at land off Pury Hill Road, Stoke Hammond.

Blain was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay costs of £12,000.

The court heard that Blain had been operating the site without an environmental permit from the Environment Agency. The site was used to store and treat large quantities of waste, including tyres, fridges, freezers, and scrap metal.

The Environment Agency’s investigation found that the site was poorly managed and posed a significant risk to the environment. The waste was not being stored securely and was being allowed to escape into the surrounding area.

The Agency also found that Blain had failed to comply with a notice requiring him to remove the waste and restore the site to its former condition.

Environment Agency officer Matt Reay said: “This was a serious case of environmental crime. Blain’s illegal activities posed a significant risk to the environment and to the local community.

“We will not hesitate to take action against those who operate illegal waste sites. We are committed to protecting the environment and ensuring that waste is managed in a responsible way.”

The Environment Agency is urging members of the public to report any suspected illegal waste activities to its hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
