Brussels, February 4, 2025 – “The integration of the Balkans and Ukraine into European value chains is crucial to strengthen the competitiveness of the European Union and to ensure the resilience of our supply chains in the long term.” This was stated by the Italian Minister for Economic Development, Adolfo Urso, in Brussels on the occasion of an informal meeting of EU Ministers for Competitiveness.
Urso stressed that “the global challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have highlighted the importance of reinforcing our economic and industrial base. We need to reduce our dependence on third countries and strengthen our technological autonomy.”
The Minister also pointed out that “the integration of the Balkans and Ukraine into European value chains would allow us to tap into new markets and attract new investments. This would create jobs and growth in both the European Union and our neighboring countries.”
Urso called on the European Commission to “take concrete steps to support the integration of the Balkans and Ukraine into our value chains. This could include providing financial assistance, technical expertise, and facilitating access to markets.”
The Minister also stressed the importance of “working closely with our partners in the Balkans and Ukraine to ensure that this integration is done in a way that is mutually beneficial. We need to take into account their specific needs and priorities.”
