February 4, 2025 – Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Prairies and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), today announced federal investments totaling $24.5 million to support affordable transportation in the North, and to strengthen trade opportunities for Canada.
The investments will support the following initiatives:
- $15 million for the Northern Transportation Adaptation Initiative: This initiative will fund projects that improve the reliability and affordability of transportation services in the North, including investments in infrastructure, technology, and training.
- $7 million for the Trade and Transportation Innovation Program: This program will support projects that develop and implement innovative solutions to improve trade and transportation in the North, including investments in research, development, and demonstration projects.
- $2.5 million for the Northern Air Transportation Strategy: This strategy will support the development of a long-term plan to improve air transportation services in the North, including investments in infrastructure, technology, and training.
Minister Vandal made the announcement at the Northern Transportation Summit in Ottawa, where he highlighted the importance of transportation for the economic and social well-being of the North.
