Backgrounder:

The North is home to approximately 100,000 people, and covers an area of over 40% of Canada’s landmass. Transportation is essential for the economic and social well-being of the North, but it is also a challenge due to the vast distances involved and the harsh climate.

The Northern Transportation Adaptation Initiative will fund projects that improve the reliability and affordability of transportation services in the North. This could include investments in infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and ports; investments in technology, such as GPS and satellite communications; and investments in training, such as driver training and maintenance training.

The Trade and Transportation Innovation Program will support projects that develop and implement innovative solutions to improve trade and transportation in the North. This could include investments in research, such as developing new technologies to reduce transportation costs; investments in development, such as testing new transportation routes; and investments in demonstration projects, such as piloting new transportation services.

The Northern Air Transportation Strategy will support the development of a long-term plan to improve air transportation services in the North. This could include investments in infrastructure, such as airports and runways; investments in technology, such as new air traffic control systems; and investments in training, such as training for pilots and air traffic controllers.
