Government of Canada supports the acquisition and renovation of Mary Gillespie House

Ottawa, February 3, 2025 – The Government of Canada is investing $1.5 million to support the acquisition and renovation of Mary Gillespie House, a historic building in downtown Halifax. This investment will help to preserve this important piece of Canadian history and make it accessible to the public.

Mary Gillespie House was built in 1825 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Halifax. It was home to Mary Gillespie, a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist who played a key role in the city’s development. The house has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada.

The Government of Canada’s investment will be used to acquire the house from its current owner and to renovate it to make it accessible to the public. The renovations will include making the house wheelchair accessible, installing new exhibits, and creating a new public space.

“Mary Gillespie House is an important part of Halifax’s history and heritage,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “This investment will help to preserve this historic building and make it accessible to the public so that they can learn about the life of Mary Gillespie and her contributions to the city.”

The acquisition and renovation of Mary Gillespie House is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to preserving and promoting Canada’s history and heritage. The Government has invested over $1 billion in heritage conservation projects since 2015.

“This investment will help to ensure that Mary Gillespie House continues to be a vibrant part of Halifax’s community,” said Andy Fillmore, Member of Parliament for Halifax. “I am proud that the Government of Canada is supporting this important project.”

The acquisition and renovation of Mary Gillespie House is expected to be completed in 2026.
