Minister of Transport and Internal Trade Announces Major Indigenous Partnerships for Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan

Ottawa, Ontario – February 3, 2025 – The Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, today announced significant new partnerships with Indigenous communities to enhance the protection and conservation of Canada’s oceans.

Under the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $1.5 billion over five years to protect Canada’s coasts and waterways. Today’s announcement builds on that investment by establishing new partnerships with Indigenous communities that will play a vital role in safeguarding our oceans for generations to come.

“Indigenous communities have a deep connection to the ocean and a wealth of knowledge and expertise that is essential to protecting our marine environment,” said Minister Alghabra. “These new partnerships will empower Indigenous communities to take a leadership role in ocean conservation and management.”

The partnerships will support a range of initiatives, including:

  • Marine Protected Areas: Indigenous communities will work with the Government of Canada to identify and establish new Marine Protected Areas to protect sensitive marine ecosystems.
  • Coast Guard Partnerships: Indigenous communities will partner with the Canadian Coast Guard to provide marine safety and environmental response services in coastal areas.
  • Indigenous Knowledge and Science: The Government of Canada will work with Indigenous communities to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and science into ocean conservation and management decisions.

“These partnerships are a recognition of the vital role that Indigenous communities play in protecting our oceans,” said Chief Marilyn Slett, President of the Assembly of First Nations. “We look forward to working with the Government of Canada to ensure that our voices are heard and that our knowledge is respected in ocean conservation and management.”

The announcement was made at an event in Ottawa attended by representatives from Indigenous communities, environmental organizations, and the Government of Canada.

The Oceans Protection Plan is a comprehensive plan to protect Canada’s coasts and waterways from threats such as oil spills, marine debris, and overfishing. The plan includes measures to strengthen marine safety, improve scientific research, and enhance enforcement of environmental laws.

Today’s announcement is a significant step forward in the implementation of the Oceans Protection Plan and will help to ensure that Canada’s oceans remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.
