Waterloo, ON – February 3, 2025 – The Governments of Canada and Ontario are investing over $100 million in transit and homelessness initiatives in the Waterloo region.
The funding will be used to improve public transit, create affordable housing, and provide support services for people experiencing homelessness.
“This investment will make a real difference in the lives of people in Waterloo,” said the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Youth and Member of Parliament for Waterloo. “It will help to improve transit, create affordable housing, and provide support services for people experiencing homelessness.”
“Our government is committed to working with our partners to end homelessness,” said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This investment will help to create more affordable housing options and provide the support services that people need to get back on their feet.”
The funding includes:
- $50 million for public transit improvements, including new buses, improved bus shelters, and enhanced accessibility features.
- $30 million for affordable housing, including the construction of new affordable housing units and the renovation of existing units.
- $20 million for support services for people experiencing homelessness, including mental health and addiction services, employment training, and housing support.
“This investment is a significant step forward in our efforts to address homelessness in Waterloo,” said Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “It will help us to create more affordable housing, provide better support services, and improve transit for people who need it most.”
The funding will be provided through the Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
