Ukraine: UNICEF Alarmed Over Incessant Attacks Devastating Young Lives

2025-02-02 12:00

Geneva/Kyiv, Ukraine – UNICEF is deeply alarmed by the incessant attacks in Ukraine that are devastating the lives of children. In the past week alone, at least seven children have been killed and 17 injured in attacks across the country.

“These attacks are a gross violation of children’s rights and must stop immediately,” said Afshan Khan, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia. “Children are bearing the brunt of this conflict, and their lives are being ripped apart.”

Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, at least 438 children have been killed and 798 injured. These numbers are likely much higher as access to many areas of Ukraine remains limited.

The attacks are not only killing and injuring children, but they are also destroying schools, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure. This is depriving children of access to education, healthcare, and other vital services.

“The long-term consequences of these attacks will be felt for generations to come,” said Khan. “We must not allow the children of Ukraine to be sacrificed in this senseless conflict.”

UNICEF is calling for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law. The organization is also urging all countries to increase their support for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine.

“Children in Ukraine need our help,” said Khan. “We must come together to protect their rights and ensure that they have a future.”
