Sudan: UN rights chief ‘alarmed’ by summary executions, attacks on civilians

GENEVA (Reuters) – The United Nations human rights chief on Monday expressed alarm at reports of summary executions and attacks on civilians in Sudan, calling for an independent investigation into the alleged abuses.

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said he was “deeply concerned” by reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests and detentions, and the use of excessive force against protesters in Sudan.

“I am particularly alarmed by the reports of summary executions of at least 10 people in El Fasher, North Darfur, on January 25,” Türk said in a statement. “These killings appear to have been carried out by security forces without due process or accountability.”

Türk also expressed concern about the arbitrary arrest and detention of dozens of protesters and civil society activists in recent weeks. He called for the immediate release of all those detained for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

The UN rights chief also condemned the use of excessive force by security forces against protesters, saying that “the use of live ammunition against unarmed protesters is unacceptable and must stop.”

Türk called on the Sudanese authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough and independent investigation into the alleged abuses and to hold those responsible accountable. He also urged the authorities to respect the rights of all Sudanese people, including the right to life, liberty and security of person.

The UN human rights office has been closely monitoring the situation in Sudan since the military coup in October 2021. Türk said that the office would continue to monitor the situation and report on any further human rights violations.

The Sudanese government has not yet commented on Türk’s statement.
