Mr Rogers, who is currently Director General of Policy and Strategy at the Ministry of Justice, has a wealth of experience in the criminal justice system, including working in prisons and youth custody settings.
He will take up his new role early summer 2025.
Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab said: I am delighted that Anthony Rogers has been appointed as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons.
Anthony has a lifetime’s experience working in the criminal justice system and brings an in-depth understanding of the issues facing prisons to this important role.
I am confident that he will build on the excellent work already undertaken by Peter Clarke and lead HMCIP with distinction.
Anthony Rogers said: I am honoured to have been appointed as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons.
I am fiercely committed to the principles of decency, humanity and integrity which should underpin our prisons.
I am keen to work with government and all those who have an interest in the prison system to help bring about improvements which benefit all those who live and work in our prisons.
Anthony Rogers joined the civil service in 1985, working across a range of government departments, including the Home Office, the Lord Chancellor’s Department and the Ministry of Justice.
He is currently the Director General of Policy and Strategy at the Ministry of Justice, where he is responsible for policy development and strategy across the justice system.
Anthony is also the Secretary to the Parole Board for England and Wales.
Notes to editors: Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons (HMCIP) is the independent inspectorate for prisons, youth custody institutions, secure training centres, immigration removal centres, and military custody in England and Wales.

Anthony Rogers will succeed Peter Clarke, who will step down as HMCIP in early summer 2025.
