The report is the culmination of more than two years of work by the Inquiry, which was tasked with examining the systemic causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada.

The report makes 231 Calls for Justice, which are intended to address the root causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. The Calls for Justice are organized into 12 themes:

  1. Justice
  2. Health
  3. Education

In a joint statement released today, the National Co-Chairs said:

“The Calls for Justice are a roadmap for change. They provide a clear path forward for governments, institutions, and individuals to work together to end violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada.”

The National Co-Chairs also called on all Canadians to commit to taking action on the Calls for Justice.

“We call on all Canadians to read the Calls for Justice and to learn about the experiences of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada,” said the Co-Chairs. “We call on all Canadians to commit to taking action on the Calls for Justice, so that we can create a better future for all.”

The release of the report is a significant milestone in the Inquiry’s work. However, the work is not yet done. The National Co-Chairs called on governments, institutions, and individuals to work together to implement the Calls for Justice.

“The Calls for Justice are a challenge, but they are also an opportunity,” said the Co-Chairs. “We believe that by working together, we can create a better future for all Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada.”
