UNAIDS Welcomes US Decision to Keep Funding Life-Saving HIV Treatment

Geneva, Switzerland – UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, has welcomed the decision by the United States President to maintain funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR is a U.S. government initiative that provides life-saving HIV treatment, prevention, care, and support services to people living with and affected by HIV in more than 50 countries around the world.
“This decision is a testament to the U.S. government’s commitment to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to ensuring that people living with HIV have access to the treatment and care they need to live long, healthy lives,” said Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director. “We commend the U.S. government for its continued leadership in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.”
PEPFAR has been a major force in the global response to HIV/AIDS, providing treatment to more than 21 million people and saving millions of lives. The program has also played a critical role in preventing new HIV infections, and in strengthening health systems in low- and middle-income countries.
The decision to maintain funding for PEPFAR is particularly important in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted health services and made it more difficult for people living with HIV to access treatment and care.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the lives of people living with HIV,” said Byanyima. “Maintaining funding for PEPFAR will help to ensure that people living with HIV can continue to access the treatment and care they need, even during these challenging times.”
UNAIDS urges other countries to follow the example of the United States and to increase their funding for HIV/AIDS programs. The global community must work together to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.
