Ottawa, Ontario – January 29, 2025 – Today, the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Youth, and Amira Elghawaby, Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, issued the following statement:
“Today, we join with Canadians across the country to mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
On January 29, 2017, six innocent Muslim men were murdered and 19 others were injured in a horrific act of terrorism at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec. This senseless attack was an assault on the values that make Canada strong: diversity, inclusion, and respect.
Since that tragic day, the Government of Canada has taken important steps to address Islamophobia and promote inclusivity. We have established a National Action Plan on Combating Hate Crimes, doubled funding for the Anti-Racism Action Program, and created the position of Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.
We are also working with provincial and territorial governments, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations to raise awareness about Islamophobia and to develop effective strategies to combat it.
However, there is still more work to be done. Islamophobia continues to be a serious problem in Canada. Muslim Canadians face discrimination and violence simply because of their faith. This is unacceptable.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to combatting Islamophobia in all its forms. We will continue to work with our partners to create a more inclusive and welcoming society for all Canadians.
We also encourage all Canadians to learn about the experiences of Muslim Canadians and to stand up against Islamophobia whenever and wherever they see it.
Together, we can build a Canada where everyone feels safe and respected, regardless of their faith or background.”
