Poplar Hill First Nation and Government of Canada Celebrate Clean Energy Connection Through Indigenous-Led Project
Poplar Hill First Nation, ON – Poplar Hill First Nation and the Government of Canada marked a significant milestone today in the community’s journey towards clean and reliable energy with the official inauguration of the Wataynikaneyap Power project.
The project, led by a consortium of Indigenous communities and businesses, has connected Poplar Hill to the provincial power grid, providing the remote community with access to clean, affordable, and reliable electricity.
“Today, we celebrate a significant step forward in our community’s energy future,” said Poplar Hill First Nation Chief, Phyllis Williams. “Wataynikaneyap Power has not only improved our quality of life but has also created new opportunities for economic development and community well-being.”
The Wataynikaneyap Power project involved the construction of a 138-kilometer transmission line and a new substation, providing a stable and reliable source of electricity for Poplar Hill and the surrounding area.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Indigenous-led energy projects that empower communities and contribute to reconciliation,” said the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Natural Resources. “Wataynikaneyap Power is a shining example of how Indigenous communities can take ownership of their energy future while protecting the environment.”
The project was developed and implemented by Wataynikaneyap Power LP, a consortium of 22 Indigenous communities and businesses, including Poplar Hill First Nation. The consortium’s mandate is to provide clean and reliable energy solutions to remote Indigenous communities across northern Ontario.
“Wataynikaneyap Power is a testament to the power of partnership and Indigenous leadership,” said Margaret Kenequanash, CEO of Wataynikaneyap Power. “We are proud to have worked alongside Poplar Hill First Nation to bring this vital infrastructure project to life.”
The project has created numerous employment opportunities for the community, with over 150 jobs created during construction and ongoing positions for operations and maintenance. The reliable electricity supply will also support the growth of local businesses and attract new investment to the area.

The Government of Canada has invested approximately $100 million in the Wataynikaneyap Power project through its Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities program. The project also received support from the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit Fund and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
