Government of Canada modernizes disaster recovery funding program
January 29, 2025
The Government of Canada announced today that it is modernizing its disaster recovery funding program to make it more flexible and responsive to the needs of communities affected by natural disasters.
The Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF) is a $2-billion fund that provides financial assistance to provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and other organizations to help them prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters.
The modernized DMAF will include a number of new features, including:
- A new streamlined application process that will make it easier for communities to access funding
- Increased flexibility in how funding can be used, so that communities can tailor their recovery efforts to their specific needs
- A focus on long-term recovery, so that communities can rebuild stronger and more resilient to future disasters
“The Government of Canada is committed to helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters,” said the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Emergency Preparedness. “The modernized DMAF will provide communities with the flexibility and resources they need to build back stronger and more resilient.”
The DMAF is a key part of the Government of Canada’s disaster risk reduction strategy. The strategy also includes measures to improve early warning systems, build more resilient infrastructure, and educate Canadians about disaster preparedness.
“The Government of Canada is taking action to reduce the risks and impacts of natural disasters on Canadian communities,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “The modernized DMAF will help us build a more resilient Canada.”
The DMAF is administered by the Public Safety Canada. For more information, please visit: www.publicsafety.gc.ca/dmaf
